Cricut machines: What do those function and feature keys really do?

Cricut Cartridges For Less Than $10!

While some Cricut pros have completely mastered the art of every button, nook and cranny on a Cricut machine, others may be slightly more hesitant to push random buttons, especially if they don’t know what the end result will be.

Rather than risk ruining a perfectly good piece of cardstock or simply avoiding the buttons at all costs, here is a quick tutorial on the function and feature keys of Cricut machines.

  • Material Saver/Paper Saver Key

This key allows users to be economical with their paper. Normally, in its default setting, the Cricut machine will cut out the desired letters or shapes in its standard orientation. This can be useful in and of itself for users who want to use both the cut out and the negative left behind in the paper. However, if that is not the case, simply hit the “Material Saver” or “Paper Saver” key and the Cricut will cut out the shapes/letters at the very top of the page, leaving the rest of the paper to be used again.

  • Real Dial Size

This nifty little key allows users to make everything one universal size. With fonts, for instance, lowercase letters are smaller and have a lower orientation than uppercase letters. This is because Cricut cuts out words to appear as they would on any other printed material. The “Real Dial Size” button takes each letter, regardless of upper or lowercase status, and cuts them out as equal size. The letters are still designed as lowercase letters but their size and placement are relative to the uppercase letters. Letters that drop like q, y, p and g are all in alignment with every other letter.

  • Space and Backspace

These keys are fairly straightforward.

  • Clear Display

The “Clear Display” button is a quick and easy way to clear graphics, words or phrases. Rather than waste time hitting the Backspace button over and over again, simply hit “Clear Display” and poof! It’s gone.

  • Reset All

This button is similar to the “Clear Display” button but with the capability of clearing all contents, including graphics, letters, settings and functions. It gives users a clean slate with the cartridge.

  • Repeat Last

This key is essentially a re-cut key. If users want multiple cut outs of exactly the same word or graphic that they just cut, simply hit this key and the Cricut will create an exact copy.

  • Sound On/Off

For those users who believe silence is golden, hit this key to silence the keypad.

  • Load Last

This key loads the paper at the last point where it was last cut.

  • Set Paper Size

This function is especially useful when using smaller pieces of paper or scraps. Users can set the size of the paper they are using so the Cricut can make the necessary adjustments.

  • Load/Unload Paper

Cricut users are extremely familiar with these keys but for the sake of covering all the function keys, these buttons load the paper to being cutting and remove paper when cutting is completed.

Now users can Rather than completely ignoring those function keys, take full advantage of them and use them to add to your designs!

    Cricut cartridges- recycle, reuse, rediscover?

Cricut Cartridges For Less Than $10!

Recently, a friend of mine was knee deep in scrapbook materials and wanted to completely reorganize her craft room. Inundated with paper, stickers, stamps and Cricut cartridges, she felt the logical thing to do was purge her collection of all the items she simply had not used in a while.

After some attempts at reorganizing and reminiscing about each cartridge, she was faced with a dilemma: Get rid of old cartridges to make room for new ones or keep them and try to rediscover a newfound love for them?

While some Cricut lovers may scoff at the idea of passing on cartridges to another, it was a very real consideration in this case. She had limited storage space and felt like her older cartridges were no longer that necessary.

Cricut storage and use are issues every Cricut user faces at one point or another. Sometimes it may feel as though we have outgrown a Cricut cartridge and if that truly is the case, why not pass it on to another Cricut colleague?

However, in her case and every case, I stress the importance of investments. Scrapbooks and paper crafting are hobbies that require a great deal of personal investments, be it time, money or creativity. Each Cricut cartridge has a unique theme, font or style. While a few may have fallen by the wayside over the years, odds are at one time or another, they will have a certain function or graphic that you’re looking for.

Instead of helping her purge her collection of undesirable cartridges, I helped her organize. With a few more Cricut totes, some creative packing techniques and newly discovered closet space, she was able to keep all of her cartridges and find room for future ones.

In fact, she realized that she hadn’t necessarily outgrown her cartridges; rather, they were simply out of sight and out of mind. Once she was able to access them easily, she started using them regularly again.

When it comes to the recycling, reusing and rediscovering Cricut cartridges, sometimes it’s just a matter of remembering why it was such a good investment in the first place!

Top 7 reasons why I love Cricut machines

Cricut Cartridges For Less Than $10!

Ever since I first used my Cricut machine, I have discovered and rediscovered countless reasons for why I love Cricut machines. For a couple of years now, I have maintained a loving and appreciative relationship with my Cricut and my cartridges, thanks to my insatiable love for all projects paper craft related.

I am firm believer that all creative projects can be completed and improved with the help of a Cricut die cut. This staunch opinion has only been reaffirmed thanks to my growing lists of reasons why I love Cricut machines.

Top 7 reasons why I love Cricut machines

Given enough time, I could come up with 100 reasons why I love my Cricut Expression, my Cricut Create and my collection of Cricut cartridges. For now, let’s go with the top 7 reasons to love this incredible device.

    1.       Convenience

Back in the day, paper crafters had to actually cut out their own shapes, letters and designs with scissors. Scissors! Today, Cricut users simply choose the graphic from their handy-dandy cartridge and push “Cut.” Within seconds, you have die cuts of every shape and size. This machine removed the hassle and busy work associated with crafts, making it all about the crafts instead of the prep work.

    2.       Making life easier one die cut at a time

With this kind of convenience in mind, users can utilize everything the Cricut machines can do including make die cuts, design layouts and even cut fondant for cake decorations. These items are all investments but they more than pay for themselves after completing a few projects.

    3.       Style and Pizzazz

Paper crafters, scrapbookers and DIY folks all know the importance of creating items with style, pizzazz and a distinct look that can’t be found in Hallmark. The Cricut is all about style, with an incredible collection of cartridges that cover everything from holidays and seasons to special occasions and everyday chores. Either way, adding a unique design and distinct look is easy, simple and fun.

    4.       “Oh this old thing?”

Showing off creations is half the fun of using a Cricut machine. Whether it’s showcasing a scrapbook or giving a handmade card to a loved one for their birthday, you can easily and effectively impress an entire roomful of people with your Cricut skills. After they have passed your creation around the room a couple of times and marveled at the finished piece you can say, “Oh this old thing? I made it like 5 minutes.”

    5.       Personalization

One of the primary reasons people use these devices is because they want to personalize their stuff. I have adding a personal touch to everything from lunchboxes and pictures frames to thank you notes and name tags. Anything I can add an accent or embellishment to, I do.

    6.       Craftiness

My friends and I love getting together for monthly Cricut nights where we all bring our cartridges and our machines together to go all out and create as many crafty things as we can in a couple of hours. It’s a free-for-all. One of the most interesting things I have come to realize from these get-togethers is that the Cricut has the power to turn even the most ambivalent crafters into a modern-day Martha Stewart. It’s simply that easy and that inspiring.

    7.       A hobby with a pretty result

There are plenty of hobbies out there that are enjoyable, yet don’t exactly end with a tangible result. Not so with paper crafting and Cricut activities. At the very least, the Cricut can result in a simple die cut that can be used later on for a different project. Or, after a productive session, the Cricut can result in a beautifully designed scrapbook page full of inside jokes and sentimental value in tangible form.

Thanks to my Cricut machines and cartridges, I have had the pleasure of creating personalized items that mean a great deal to me, my friends and my family. When it comes to reasons why I love Cricut machines, these are just a handful of thoughts and experiences.

What are your thought? Do any of these reasons ring true with your experience? Share your own "Top 7 reasons why I love Cricut machines!"

How to Scrapbook on a Budget

Cricut Cartridges For Less Than $10!

Scrapbooking is a great way to spend your time while preserving your memories. If you’re not careful, it’s also an easy way to spend a lot of money. If you’re thinking about starting scrapbooking, but are afraid you’ll rack up too big a bill, or if you’ve been scrapbooking for a while and just want to cut costs, there are some great places to find products without spending a lot of cash.

Thrift stores. These are great places for all kinds of finds. You could find fabric, buttons, silk flowers, ribbon. The only thing limiting what you find is your own imagination and creativity. You may even get lucky and find scrapbooking supplies that someone didn’t think they wanted to use or keep around.

Discount department stores. While stores like Wal-mart and Target are probably not the best place to find the products you’re looking for in a high quality (paper, sheet protectors, adhesive), you can probably find great embellishments and decorations to spice up your layouts. Wrapping paper, ribbons, flowers, even discount greeting cards. Just like thrifts stores, the only limit to what you’ll find there is you.

    Fabric stores.
When it comes to ribbons, bows, buttons, and even tools, you may be able to find what you’re looking for cheaper at a fabric store (or fabric section of a department store) a whole lot cheaper than at a scrapbooking store. Plus, they have a variety to fit every style.

Your own home. Finding great stuff for your scrapbooks doesn’t always mean going to the store. Old clothes, broken jewelry, spare buttons, old birthday cards, kids arts and crafts projects, even trash can be used in your scrapbooks.

Online. The internet is a great place to find quality products at a discount. While you don’t need to spend a lot of money on many things in scrapbooking, there are other materials you don’t want to cut corners with. These include the Cricut Expression, Cricut cartridges, quality acid-free paper, embellishments, cardstock, and sheet protectors. Cutting corners in these areas will likely cause damage to your photos and leave you upset.

It’s important to find a reputable online store out of the thousands of sites selling scrapbooking tools and supplies online. It’s not hard to find what you’re looking for, the challenge is finding what you’re looking for in good quality at a decent price. Do some research on scrapbooking websites and message boards. You’ll find there are a lot of people who have done the legwork for you and are willing to help you out, you just have to ask.

The biggest concern with finding supplies online is that, when they show up, they might not be exactly what you’re looking for. The best way to remedy this is to find items you want at your local store, and then check online for discount prices. That way you’ll have no surprises when the box arrives.

With a little time and searching, you can get your scrapbooks started for pennies a day.

The Importance of Creating a Scrapbook Area

Cricut Cartridges For Less Than $10!

I love to hang out on my couch and floor. I can play on my computer, listen to music, pretty much do anything all while being comfortable. The one thing I can’t do is scrapbook. While you might think one of those lap desks is going to suffice, or that carpet is a perfect place to set up layouts, you will soon find that this is not going to work. You need to have a place set aside to store your supplies and do your work. It doesn’t need to be big, but it should have a few essentials.

Scrapbooking requires a flat, hard, and preferably large surface. You should have a desk or a table that you can work at. This will give you room to spread all your stuff out, and give you a solid working surface. That way you can cut and trace precisely and glue accurately.

Another essential element of your scrapbooking area is shelves. This is even more important if your desk or table is small or used for other things. You need as much space as possible without all your materials getting in your way. If you use larger tools like the Cricut Expression and Cricut cartridges, shelf space becomes even more imperative.

One thing many people don’t consider when setting up their scrapbooking area is safety for your supplies. You may thing about putting your area in your basement or garage because there’s extra room, but it’s probably a better decision to move something else down there to make room for your new space.

If your scrapbooking stuff gets too cold or hot, too much sunlight, or gets wet, it can get ruined. Supplies are bound to succumb to wear and tear but keeping them in a secure area can lessen any unnecessary damage. When you’re picking a spot, consider temperature and humidity control, sun exposure, and whether or not there’s a possibility of flooding. Moving stuff around in your house may take a bit of extra time, but it will preserve a lot of memories.

So now, you’ve got your area picked, bought your desk or table, gathered your storage stuff, and bought your scrapbooking supplies. You’re ready put it together right?

Before you start adding stuff as fast as possible, plan first. You want to have the whole area ready and set up just as you like it. That will make it easier to rearrange if you decide something isn’t going to work. It’s a whole lot harder to make changes when it involves moving a whole pile of supplies. If you’re overwhelmed with supplies, shop around for storage units like Cricut totes.

The last thing to consider in your scrapbooking area is inspiration. If you can decorate the walls or hang pictures up, do so. Add pictures of your family, inspirational poems and sayings; anything to get the juices flowing. Why not add a bulletin board to hang up layouts or a marker board to draw ideas?

These are just the basics you need for your area. Remember, that your scrapbooks are unique so the area you make them in should be too.

With these 5 Tips to Remember When Buying Cricut Cartridges, fellow Cricut users can be confident in their purchases and absolutely guilt-free.

5 Tips to Remember When Buying Cricut Cartridges

    1. Research the cartridge before you buy it

When I first began investing in cartridges, I would simply look at the graphics and ask myself, “Are these adorable or not?” While charming and whimsical images are indeed a must-have, shoppers should also look into the number of graphics, whether or not it is a hybrid cartridge, the quality of the special features and most importantly, what other buyers are saying about the cartridge. Read the reviews to gauge just how high the satisfaction level is on the cartridge.

    2.  Cartridges are a creative investment, no matter what anyone else tells you

These wonderfully compact cartridges have completely revolutionized the scrapbook world and beyond. While they may not be the most inexpensive of tools, they can be used day after day, year after year. Do not feel bad about investing in your craft and in your hobby.

    3.  Shop for cartridges with versatile themes

Versatility is the difference between using a Cricut cartridge once a year and once a week. Certain cartridges have very specific themes, which are perfectly suitable if you are looking for something pertaining to that theme. However, if you are looking to expand your collection, look at fan favorites like, the Tags, Bags, Boxes and More Cricut cartridge, the Potpourri Basket Cricut cartridge and the Beyond Birthdays Cricut cartridge. These are the cartridges designed for daily use on a wide variety of projects.

    4.  Buy cartridges the whole family can enjoy

While your family may not be as into scrapbooks and paper crafts as you are, they can benefit just as much from certain creative tools. You can easily add to the décor of your house and your children's room with the help of the Home Décor Solutions Cricut cartridge, Indie Art Cricut cartridge, the Disney cartridges, Nickelodeon’s Spongebob Squarepants Cricut cartridge, and one of the many sports themed cartridges. Turn Your Trash into Scrapbooking Treasure

Cricut Cartridges For Less Than $10!

When you’re done with making a layout, what do you do with the scraps and pieces left over? Do you throw them away? Are they sitting in a drawer, file, or basket just taking up space? Why not use those scraps to add a unique special touch to your layouts? You’ll not only save yourself money on supplies, you’ll be reducing waste to help save the planet.

Punches are a great way to use scraps and add fun flair to your scrapbooks. Most scrapbook stores sell punches that turn your tidbits of paper and cardstock into tiny puppies, stars, rainbows and shapes of every kind. To cut the cost of punches, go shopping with your friends and buy punches you think you all can use. You can trade when you need them or use them at group get-togethers.

If you’re looking for something a little fancier than punches, check out die cut machines like the Cricut Expression. These machines allow users to hook up cartridges pre-loaded with graphics, fonts and phrases and program the Cricut machines to cut out the selected images. You can use leftover scraps of paper to get all the cut-outs you want.

When it comes to creating backgrounds, most are just a collections of pictures. You can make great embellishments and additions to layouts just by taking pictures from smaller background pieces. This is great if you tend to recycle materials like wrapping paper and greeting cards. While a whole group of flowers may make a great layout, a single flower from the same page can be just as, or more beautiful.

Mosaics are a fantastic way to reuse even the smallest scraps. You can be simple by making flowers or sunsets. If that’s just too easy for you, you can find pictures you like and recreate them with scraps. To make the process more efficient, try organizing your scraps by color then size. This will make them easier to sort through for other uses too.

Scrapbooking stores sell all kinds of letters to add titles and substance to a layout. But why spend a lot of money on letters that may not be exactly what you’re looking for? Extra pieces are great for making your own unique lettering. Solid colors make great letters, but you can also experiment with patterns. While if might take more time than buying pre-cut letters or stamping them on, it will give your layout a special touch to make it stand out.

Did you know you can use leftover paper to make your own recycled paper? Just make your scraps very small, add a small amount of water and blend. Then, spread it out on silver foil, blot with paper towels, and allow it to dry. The end result is a thick, textured paper that can be for kid’s crafts, or to add a special touch to your scrapbooks.

Do your kids have an interest in scrapbooking too? Giving them your leftover scraps is a great way to get them started without spending a lot of money on supplies. You can even find very inexpensive digital cameras just for kids so they can take their own pictures for their layouts. They’ll have fun, create memories, and they might just give you some great ideas.

These are just a few of the many ways you can save money, save the environment, and even have some fun.

Inexpensive Scrapbooking Ideas for Your Home

Cricut Cartridges For Less Than $10!

When you finally make the decision to start making scrapbooks, you’re very likely to go out and buy all the materials you think you need from paper and embellishments to Cricut machines and Cricut cartridges. The problem is, buying too many things you don’t need or can’t afford can lead to a unfortunate case of buyer’s remorse.

While buying some things may be necessary, it’s is also easy to make a scrapbook on a budget by simply using items found in your very own home. All you need to do is take a look around. Here are a few household keepsakes that can be used to scrapbook?

    •    Clothes.
If you have clothes that are too worn out or stained to make good hand me downs or donations, why not add pieces of them to your layouts.  Not only will you be saving money and making less trash, you’ll also be reminded of great memories of your loved ones even if you didn’t manage to get a picture.

    •    Jewelry.
Have an earring that’s missing its mate?  A necklace with a broken clasp?  What about a bracelet your child has outgrown?  Instead of getting rid of them or just filling up space in a box, why not use them to add a little sparkle to your scrapbooks?

    •    Gift decorations.
Think about all the birthday, Christmas, baby, wedding, and any other gifts you’ve ever given or received.  Now think about all the money you spend on wrapping paper, bags, bows, ribbons, and other decorations.  Sometimes old decorations can be reused, but often they just get shoved in a closet or thrown away.  Using them in your scrapbooks can make beautiful layouts and bring you back to the special occasion where you got them.  Just watch out, some of these products can have high acid content.

    •    Trash.
Yes, some trash belongs in a trash can (or a compost heap), some might just make for a creative new layout.  Next time you go to throw something away, take a good hard look at it first.  It might just make a great background, border, or embellishment.

    •    Souvenirs and Memories.
Pictures aren’t the only way to spark your memories.  Add to pictures of your ski trip by using your lift ticket or trail map in your scrap book.  If your son won the science fair, use his blue ribbon to add a special touch.  Remember good times with friends by scrapping the tickets stubs from a movie you saw together or a matchbook from the restaurant you always eat at.

    •    Storage.
You can not only use things you already have to put in your scrapbook, you can also store your supplies in items that may be taking up closet (or trash) space.  Old jars and cups work great for storing ribbons and other embellishments.  Did your husband get a new tackle box and hasn’t gotten rid of the old one?  All those little spaces are great for organizing buttons are even different adhesives.

When it comes down to it, scrapbooking is 100% about creativity. Sure, tools like Cricut cartridges and charming embellishments can make creating a page fun, simple and easy. But imagination is the all-important personal tool. There are plenty of things you can use in a scrapbook that aren’t found at a scrapbooking store; you just need to teach yourself to recognize them.

So get up, look around your house, and start scrapping.
